A flicker of light

The nights are drawing in.

It’s time to wrap up for strolls among the autumn trees. Time to curl up with a warm pot of tea in front of the fireplace. Time to settle in early with a comforting book.

It’s been raining here in England over the last few days, gloominess seeping into almost every hour. So, while I’ve been writing, I’ve enjoyed having a candle on my desk. I love its warm glow and how it fills the air with a beautiful, floral scent.

My nan always used to say, wherever there’s a tiny bit of light, like a handkerchief of blue in an angry sky, there is always hope.

Writing itself can bring a flicker of light, a flicker of hope.

On the darkest days, write something that brings you joy or is fun to craft. A witty poem. A light-hearted story. An uplifting piece of dialogue. You could recollect a favourite memory in your journal too.

If your mind is racing and it’s difficult to write, try lighting a candle and focusing on the flame. As you watch it flicker and glow, allow your breath to steady. Can you feel its warmth? Does it have a scent?

Take a deep breath then fully exhale. Repeat a few times as you keep your eyes on the flame. Enjoy its beauty. See if you can use your breath to make it dance without blowing it out. Don’t worry if you do. You can always light it again just as, if a piece of writing isn’t working, you can have another go.

Enjoy taking a little time out. Take as long as you need. Then try writing again.

Whenever there are words, even just one, there is the hope of something more.

Find a little light, believe in yourself and begin.
